HISTORICAL PATRIMONY - READING

Historical Patrimony can be defined as a material, natural or immovable asset that has significant and artistic, cultural, religious, documentary or aesthetic importance for society. These estates were built or produced by past societies, so they represent an important source of research and cultural preservation.

There is a world-wide concern in preserving the historical patrimonies of humanity, through laws of protection and restorations that allow the maintenance of the original characteristics.

In Brazil, there is the IPHAN (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage). This body acts in Brazil in the management, protection and preservation of historical and artistic heritage in Brazil.

When a property is tilted by some organ of historical patrimony, it can not be demolished, nor even reformed. It can only go through restoration process, following specific norms, to preserve the original characteristics of the time in which it was constructed.
